FTC EXTENDS DEADLINE TO AUGUST 1

Published May 8, 2009

With healthcare providers and many businesses still blissfully unaware of the Red Flag rules or that they are covered under new compliance requirements, the FTC waited until the eve of the deadline of May 1 to extend final compliance enforcement until August 1, 2009.

Comments in the extension message acknowledged that some thought the FTC had taken the anti-identity theft law beyond its intended reach and would seek relief from Congress.  It was also suggested that the agency should provide a template approach option for small business.
