Patient Murder Not Reported

Room mate had history of assaulting other residents.

Published Apr 6, 2006

Staff members at the Foundation Park Care Center in Toledo, OH, allegedly failed to immediately report the stabbing of an Alzheimer’s resident by his roommate, according to western New York’s North County Gazette.

The resident died 10 days later of complications from a punctured lung and fractured ribs and nose.

The roommate, who allegedly suffers from a mental disorder and dementia, has a history of assault on other care facility residents. But Foundation Park placed him in the Alzheimer’s unit despite his previous incidents, and after he repeatedly stabbed his roommate did not report the assault to either police or the Ohio Department of Health.

Reports did not indicate whether the nursing home identified or treated the injuries prior to the death.

The resident’s attorneys will seek an insanity defense, the Gazette reported.

Possible actions against the nursing home were not announced.
