Active Shooter Incidents Spark Call for Provider Updates

In the aftermath of an active shooter incident in a Chicago area hospital that left four people, including a physician, pharmacist, and police officer dead, the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response encouraged all providers to review its planning and response guide [<download link] for active shooter incidents, as well as other resources issued by the agency.

The Chicago incident strikes close to home geographically and personally — I work with ED physicians constantly, my daughter and wife are hospital pharmacists, and my brother is a retired law enforcement officer. In my role as a healthcare risk management consultant, I am getting more questions about where to get training personally or for organizations.  As many of you know, my “go-to” outside resource on my webinars on security is Steve Wilder.

Steve recently put out this description of his services on Active Shooter education. I wanted to share this with you in case it may help fill a need in your organization:

“Our program The Active Shooter / Armed Intruder in the Healthcare Facility: Planning For…Responding To…Recovering From the Unthinkable has received national acclaim for it’s focus on survival techniques for both employees and patients/residents.  The program content, developed by healthcare security professionals and law enforcement professionals, focuses specifically on the healthcare environment. ”

“The full program (4 hours), recommended for management and members of the leadership team includes:

·Creating a State of Preparedness

·Terminology and Concepts in Active Shooter Preparedness

·Learning from Others Experiences:  An Active Shooter event in a Healthcare Facility

·Decision Making and Stress Control

·Developing Your Active Shooter Safety Action Plan

·Deciding Between Patient / Resident Safety and Personal Safety

·Developing Your Program and Training Your Staff

·Post Incident Recovery Considerations”

“For non-exempt and non-supervisory personnel, the 1.5 hour version focuses on the actual “what to do” in the event of an active shooter or an armed intruder.  The program is available with SWA team members presenting, or in a “train the trainer” model.”

“For a brief overview of our program, please visit our website at www.swa4safety.com and scroll to the bottom of the home page.  There, you will find a short 10 minute video that we produced for Willis Tower Watson Insurance and Argentum that provides an overview of the program.”
