Active Shooter Programs For Healthcare

Steve Wilder — one of the featured presenters in our webinars — has announced a new training series for healthcare. While I am not involved in Steve’s work, I am in a good position to evaluate it and recommend him and his team on this issue:

Sorensen, Wilder & Associates (SWA) is excited to share with you information on three new, timely and sensitive healthcare training programs we have just developed:

ARMED INTRUDER / ACTIVE SHOOTER IN A HEALTHCARE FACILITY

Written by our own Jim Minninger, a retired police sergeant and former SWAT officer with an extensive background in active shooter response protocols, this six hour training program addresses multiple issues facing healthcare workers during an active shooter scenario, including:

· Case studies of and lessons learned from past events
· Understanding how to achieve a state of preparedness
· Developing an Active Shooter Safety Action Plan
· Stress control and critical decision making
· The PHASE incident, the CAVE incident, and the evolution of one into the other
· The Four OUT’s of an Active Shooter response: Get Out – Hide Out – Keep Out – Take Out
· Patient Safety vs. Personal Safety in an Active Shooter incident

Taught by healthcare security professionals and law enforcement professionals, this program is tailored for presentation to an individual facility or at a conference or seminar. Hopefully, you will never face such a scenario, but as we know, you can never say never. Inner-city hospital or critical access hospital in a rural setting, you have to take the possibility seriously and prepare in advance!

ARMED INTRUDER / ACTIVE SHOOTER IN A LONG TERM CARE FACILITY

Much the same as above, this program is specially tailored for the unique settings and circumstances found in a long term care facility, where staffing patterns and facility design create new challenges in protecting your residents and your employees!

ARRIVE ALIVE: STREET SAFETY FOR THE TRAVELING HEALTHCARE WORKER

Acts of violence against healthcare workers continues to make the news. And, while no healthcare worker is completely “safe”, few are actually at greater risk than those who work in the field visiting people’s homes, and often trafficking through dangerous neighborhoods. Unfortunately, victims usually invite the attacks by being ill-prepared and making themselves easy targets.

This three hour program, which can be expanded to a full day program that includes physical techniques to escape an assailant, is designed for all healthcare workers who make a living on the street…Home Care Nurses, Delivery Personnel, Meals on Wheels, Hospice, EMS…any healthcare professional working in the field can learn from the content of this program.

The Street Safety Continuum…Prevention, Preparedness, and Response is something that every employee working in the field should be trained on and be able to put into practice. In addition, we include the SWA Threat Matrix, a tool to help identify potential threats during your initial patient assessments and give you the tools you need to protect yourself and your coworkers on future visits.

The healthcare industry, much like our everyday society, seems to be getting more and more dangerous. As the employer, you have the obligation to identify the hazards and then train and prepare your employees. At SWA, we have the programs and resources you need!

I invite you to call me today for more information or to talk about bringing this training to your facility.
